The Lake Ice Extent (LIE) is monitored using optical and thermal infrared satellite data, and it classifies a section of the freshwater body as (1) Fully snow-covered ice; (2) Partially snow-covered ice/clear ice; (3) Open water. Classification is provided only for cloud free pixels, with a dedicated cloud mask. The gridded data product covers Continental Europe with 250 m (0.0025 degree) resolution; however, original VIIRS data were in 375 m resolution. The LIE product can have several important applications from climate change monitoring and hydrological forecasting to winter transport and recreational activity on lakes.
